🐱 Acts 1: 12-26, Parallels: Proverbs 16: 33
📖After the ascension of Christ, Luke & the disciples along with Jesus’ mother & brothers, grieving the loss of Jesus, return to the upper room & pray. We learn a bit of what happened to Judas from Luke’s account. Then Peter speaks of the old scriptures being fulfilled & the need to replace Judas. They nominated 2, prayed for God to see their hearts & then they cast lots which fell to Matthias.
💭 In Biblical times, “casting lots” was often done using objects such as stones or pieces of wood that were marked or numbered, & then thrown or drawn from a container to make a decision. This action is mentioned multiple times in the Bible, but Proverbs 16:33 tells that though you may cast lots, the decision is from the Lord. When the disciples used the Lots to choose the person to replace Judas it was the last time Lots were used in the Bible. This moment marks the beginning of a new era in which the Holy Spirit becomes the primary means by which the disciples receive direction and guidance.
💬How does the transition from the use of lots to the reliance on the Holy Spirit as the primary source of guidance & direction highlight the importance of prayer & discernment in our own lives? How can we seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our own decision-making processes?
📖 🙏🏻🐈 Oh Heavenly Father thank you for another day with new mercy. Lord let us look to you & listen to you for guidance on our day. Let the Holy Spirit’s wisdom lead us in our daily decisions. May we trust in your will. In your name as your children we pray together. Amen.
